STREET FOOD
Barcelona is protective of its many restaurants, bars and cafés and goes to great lengths to ensure those businesses don’t have to deal with unchecked competition. As a result, food trucks have had a hard time getting their foot in the door with local councils, with most standing little chance of obtaining a licence to sell to the public.
The trucks and their food sellers are, however, welcome at the many concerts and festivals the city holds, such as the popular Primavera Sound Festival.
The big boost for food trucks has come from the pop-up food markets that have started appearing over the last five years, some of which charge a small entrance fee. At these markets, the food trucks and stalls are the main attraction. The longest ones stretch out over three days, while the shortest will be up for just a day, so you need to be quick. Some of the food sellers have their own premises and moonlight at these markets, while others exist only sporadically.
Locals love the novelty of queuing up for food and then finding somewhere to perch and eat it, bumping into friends (Barcelona is a small city) and making a day of it. Whatever the market, it will be busy from the get-go.
Inspired by the success of street food, local municipalities have started coming up with their own food markets. These are different in format, with stalls instead of trucks, usually representing existing restaurants. One popular example is Tast a la Rambla, with 60 restaurants taking part, on the busy avenue of Las Ramblas. It’s an excellent way to get to taste the food of some of the best restaurants in the city without spending too much money. The restaurants, meanwhile, are able to connect with a new clientèle and drum up future business.
